In the abstract but highly entertaining film, In Time (2011), starring Justin Timberlake, writer and film director Andrew Niccol takes us on a journey. He tells the story of a place where time is the only currency. It is a world where everyone over the age of 25 pays for their own continued existence by earning ‘minutes’. Instead of being paid a wage, in the monetary sense, people are remunerated with a longer life. In this world, assets, products and services all cost time (so, for instance, a drink costs around six minutes and a commute on the bus costs around twenty minutes) which is debited from your ‘life timeline’.

As unbelievable and out of this world as the concept may seem, it unpacks some interesting perspectives on the concept of time as a tangible and precious resource, as a commodity and an asset. In the film, individuals are also able to transfer time to each other, highlighting the value of ‘giving time’ and ‘giving up time’. One of the most memorable lines from the film, ‘Don’t waste my time’, comes from a mysterious benefactor who transfers a century of time to Timberlake’s character who suddenly becomes ‘time wealthy’.

In reality, the clock does not discriminate whether you are time rich or time poor, but it is important to be aware of the nuances of your attitude to time and to make the most out of the opportunities you have. There are many people who wish there were more hours in the day to pursue their dreams and ambitions, but are constrained by either full-time employment or other commitments. As more of us opt to take up fractional roles or flexible working hours, more of us will come to appreciate and make the most of the time and resources available to us outside our existing jobs or commitments. 3
